The Evolving Role of Sauna

The Evolving Role of Sauna

Sauna has always been about more than just heat. It’s about connection—to ourselves, to each other, and to tradition. From historic Finnish bathhouses to modern spas and thermal experiences, the way we sauna is shifting, but the core experience stays the same.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how sauna culture is evolving. In Finland, communal bathhouses were once the heart of the neighborhood. You’d sweat together, talk, and unwind. That sense of shared experience hasn’t disappeared—it’s just finding new forms. Public sauna events are bringing people together in unexpected ways, while other places are reimagining sauna spaces entirely.

There’s also been a shift in how people personalize their sauna experience. I'm constantly excited seeing how folks are using, experimenting and expanding sauna culture. I’ve seen folks blending heat with breathwork, sound therapy, yoga—it's beautiful to watch this culture continuously evolve. The beauty of sauna is that while the fundamentals stay the same, there’s always room for innovation.

Where’s it all headed? More accessibility, more sustainability, and more ways to gather. Saunas are popping up in places where they never existed before, and with that comes new traditions. But at its core, sauna will always be about the same thing: stepping into the heat, breathing deep, and sharing the experience.

Some places that we have been loving lately and are worth checking out are:
